{BirchBox} Better Together

September 2015
“Five years ago, we started Birchbox because we believed in a better way to discover the best in beauty. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for joining us on this amazing journey!”

Yay! September you have finally arrived. How nice of you to join the party. I happen to love fall and everything except for pumpkin spice that goes with it. I love the cooler nights, short days, beautiful leaves fill out the trees, apples for eating, and pumpkins for carving. Not to mention my birthday and my favorite holiday Halloween is just around the corner. Fall it totally my jam and I cannot get enough of it. Well that is until my allergies are in full swing and I cannot speak because I sneeze 24/7, then I’m over it.

September 15
Fall means switching up my beauty routine and prepping my skin for winter. I start putting away my light summer formulas and pull out my heavy duty moisturizers. My tan starts to fade and my skin loses its luster, fall I love you, but you are not good for my skin. Fall is also tights weather, I love wearing tights with my dresses and pulling out my heavier cardigans and blazers, not to mention my plethora of ballet flats too. In MN we know our days are numbered and that mother nature will be dumping the all to familiar white stuff on us soon. So we reveal in the short days sunshine, cuddle on the cold nights, and count our blessings.

Sept 15

Enough about my fall obsession lets get to this months box!

“So AJ what did you get in your September Birchbox?”

Sept 2015

Better Together – September 2015

(Malin + Goetz) Grapefruit face cleanser: this citrusy cleanser dissolves dirt and oil, clears up breakouts, and balances skins natural pH.
————————–>This is such a great cleanser. It is a light weight gel formula, that has a nice citrus scent, and it works into a nice cleansing lather. It powered through my makeup and left my skin feeling clean. I will definitely be buying the full-sized product in the future.

*******BONUS******* (Malin + Goetz) vitamin e face moisturizer: oil free formula that nourishes all skin types with hyaluronic acid and vitamin E.
————————–> Foil packet! but hey it counted towards my point total. I got 10 points for reviewing it.

Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo: enriched with olive oil and rice protein, this formula smooths frizzed-out and tangle proned hair.
————————–>As you all know by now I am a huge fan of the Davines brand and this shampoo lives up to their name. It smells so good and it tamed my frizz. This was my September sample choice item and I could not be happier. The Davines sample size is amazing, you get a little 2oz bottle, those 2oz go a long long way too.

*******BONUS******* Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner: calms frizz thanks to Minuta Oliveit’s rich with fatty acids, providing moisture and shine.
————————–> Foil packet, but who cares its Davines condition which is also amazing. Plus I got 10 points for reviewing my little foil packet.

NERD Skincare Super Hydrating Mask: lightweight mask enhanced with hyaluronic acid for a more youthful, smoother complexion.

POP Beauty Portfolio Eye shadow – Sugar Plum: a trifecta of long-wearing, blendable eyeshadows in bold, pigmented purples
————————–> The colors in this little set are so fall, purple just screams fall to me.

Rituals Happy Buddha Foaming Shower Gel: the sweet orange and cedar gel foams up into a thick lather, moisturizing, and nourishing skin.
————————-> The name alone made my smile, instantly pictured a little fat smiling Buddha. At first I though the scent was going to be a little on the manly side, however I was pleasantly surprised, it is amazing. I like that the scent is spicy and sweet, it is not over powering and light. You only need a little bit to create a nice lather, it left my skin feeling soft. Plus the sample size is huge for Birchbox standards.

I will admit, this was a gosh darn down right awesome box! My sample sizes were huge this month, well except for the two foil packets, but who cares when my samples were huge. Birchbox always sends out a great box during their anniversary month. Not to mention, the box was beautiful and it carried such a positive message “You’re Beautifl.” So many women need to hear and see that in their lives, all of us are beautiful and no one can take that away from you.

{BirchBox} Soak It Up – August 2015

IMG_8570
“As summer peaks (temp-wise a d watermelon consumption wise), we’re taking advantage of every last minute. That means embracing air-dried hair, ensuring our skincare is SPF-heavy and keeping our makeup minimal. Here’s to making the most of summer’s last gasp.”

Woot! Its August which means two things, one its my two year anniversary with Birchbox, that’s a total of 24 boxes folks, and unfortunately August means summer is pretty much over. The Great Minnesota Get Together aka the state fair is in full swing, school buses are zooming down the road, and road construction is giving us its last blast of torture. On the bright side I still have my beloved Birchbox, two years of surprises and oh no they sent me that! I love getting Birchbox and get excited every month when I can unlock it to see what the mailman will be bringing me.
August 15
This month’s box is super gosh darn cute! I am loving the 3D feel of the box and it makes me just want to jump right in the pool. The pool is fake, well played Birchbox, well played! Anyways I am soaking in the last few days of summer sunshine, winter will be here before I know it. Damn winter always comes way to fucking soon, we barely get fall here in Minnesota, winter is a cheater. Cheaters never win. Enough of this crazy winter talk, lets talk about the good stuff, you know the samples!!

“Lady! What did you get in your Soak it up Birchbox!?”

Aug 15

Soak It UP – August 2015

Air Repair Complexion Boosting Moisturizer: Packed with antioxidants and humectacts, this rich cream hydrates and revitalize dry dull skin.
—————————–> This was my sample choice item for the month of August, I am always in the market for trying out a new facial moisturizer. This one was just meh, it really didn’t do anything for me.

Curly Hair Solutions Silk Leave in Conditioner: This detangling treatment smooths strands to leave curls soft and frizz free, even in humidity.
——————————-> I am not a leave in product kind of girl so this one is going into the gift pile. I have a curly haired friend who will love this sample.

LAQA & Co Charm School Kit: This creamy crayon delivers a rich, easy to apply color for both lips and cheeks.
——————————>I received the sample in Cray Cray which is an apricot hue, that hue does not place well with pale freckled children, so it is a miss for me.

R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo: Style-refreshing spray saps excess oil, gives hair volume and body, and adds tousled texture.
—————————->The packaging alone is so pretty, it has a water color type painting of the desert on the can. The spay smells really good, is light weight, and sops up oil just like it claims.

Supergood Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Cream SPF 37: This treatment reduces dark circles, depuffs under eye bag, blocks UV rays and minimizes lines.
—————————> I love any product that depuffs and lightens my dark raccoon bags, plus this has sun screen in it too boot. That is an a plus in my book.

This box wasn’t the greatest and it wasn’t bad either. It was just sort of kind of meh for me. I will use all of the products except for the cray cray lip color. I hope you loved everything in your box this month!

{BirchBox} for CEW Mass Appeal Box 2015

CEW 2015It’s hard to cut through the clutter in the drugstore beauty aisle—but that’s why we have the Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) Insiders’ Choice Beauty Awards. Every year, over 6,000 industry pros come together and vote on the year’s best and brightest products. This exclusive Birchbox collection features drugstore-available honorees from the 2015 awards—you’ll get a luxurious overnight mask, a lip pencil that packs a wallop of creamy color, and more.

I am a huge fan of the limited edition CEW Mass Appeal box, its a box filled with products that fit into my budget. Plus I love that you can buy everything at your local drug store or mass market retailer, no need to stand in line at a fancy beauty counter. This years Mass Appeal box is a great mix of makeup and skin care products. A girl needs to have a healthy foundation to apply the makeup to, skin care is number one in my book. The box was filled with brands that I all ready knew and trusted, plus there were a few brands I have never tried before.

“Lady! What did you get in your 2015 CEW Mass Appeal Box?!”

CEW 15

CEW Mass Appeal Box 2015:

Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Sedona Sands (Full size): This shea butter lip crayon offers creamy, matte color combined with nourishing moisture.
—————————->Sedona Sands is a really great neutral color that will compliment most skin tones. I love Burt’s Bees, however this product falls a little short, the color did not hold up to my daily coffee, thou it did leave my lips feeling nourished. I will probably buy the lip crayon in a different color, I like a little bit of color on my lips and not one that blends right in.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths: These mild, fragrance-free wipes remove dirt and makeup while maintaining skin’s healthy moisture balance.
—————————> Finally! a Wipe that doesn’t smell, I love me some cleansing cloths, however I do not like the scent they leave behind. This wipe leaves no scent or residue behind and that is an A+ in my beauty book.

Laneige Water Sleep Mask: This Korean cult fave works to hydrate and replenish skin overnight-so you can wake up to a soft, glowing complexion.
————————-> I gave this a whirl, however I am not sure it did anything while I slept. I woke up to the same old skin, there was no glowing in my bathroom mirror. The Koreans can keep it.

Olay Regenrist Luminous Dark Circle Correcting Hydraswirl Eye Cream (Full size): This two part formula instantly brightens dark circles and hydrates skin for a firmer, smoother appearance.
—————————> I got this in a Target box earlier in the summer and it is amazing. I noticed a huge difference in my raccoon eyes. My dark circles have faded and my skin seems firmer.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Rockin’ Curves Mascara (Full size): This brilliant mascara wand is twisted to help pump up volume and reach even your tiniest lashes sans clumping.
————————-> The brush has a really weird shape and I found it a little difficult to use. Otherwise it did what it claimed sans clumps.

Simple Skincare Utra-Light Gel Moisturizer (Full size): This unique, ultra-light and fast absorbing gel leaves your skin with an immediate soft touch – the perfect base for your make-up!
———————–> I am totally into gel moisturizers right now and this one totally delivers.

This was a great box! As in 4 out of the 6 products featured in the box are full-sized products. The cost of the Mass appeal box is $15.00 plus shipping. I used 20 BirchBox points and paid $0.00 for the box, I love getting things for free. The Box is still for sale on the BirchBox site, so hop on over and get yourself one. https://www.birchbox.com/shop/cew-mass-2015

{BirchBox} Go Bold – July 2015

July 2015
“Summer is not the time to hold back. It’s the season of wearing brights on brights on brights, driving with the windows down, and eating popsicles for breakfast.”

Dude I totally eat popsicles for breakfast and ice cream for dinner, I just do it all year round. I love summer right now everything is so fresh and light. The farmers markets are brimming with bounty from the fields, road trips with the boyfriend, and running though the sprinkler with Sophia. Not to mention my nephew Jack arrived this month, he is a cute little peanut and I cannot wait to spoil him rotten.

July 15

Here in Minnesota we are going through a heat wave, one so hot it just melts your makeup right off. I have been pairing down my routine to just a tinted moisturizer and gloss, it holds up well to the heat monster. My curly hair is another story, frizz and buns are my BFFs right now. I am waiting for cooler less humid days and stary nights. We still have a lot of summer left in MN, so I am trying to soak up every last drop, AJ ain’t got time for fancy beauty routines and Birchbox totally got my vibe this month.

“So Lady, what did you get in your BirchBox this Month? Was it BOLD!?”

July-15
BirchBox – Go Bold

Cartier Baiser Vole perfume: from a brand that knows elegance, a romantic floral scent with notes of fresh powdered lily.
————————> I didn’t know powdered lilies existed. I actually like this scent it is very fresh and simple, clean yet romantic. You definitely will not see me shelling out for the full-sized product, $106 is above my uptown hipster girl budget.

Davines Minu Shampoo: richly foaming wash that gently cleanses hair and safeguards color.
**BONUS! GET YOUR BONUS SAMPLES RIGHT HERE, STEP ON UP LADIES! GET YOUR BONUS**
Davines Minu Conditioner and Davines Minu hair serum,
———————–> if you are a regular, then you know that I love the Davines brand! I am a total fan girl, all of their products smell like heaven and clean like a dream. Its an Italian brand and it is a little bit on the higher end of the beauty budget, but it is totally worth the price. The Minu shampoo & conditioner smell so good, I love how it left my hair feeling soft and smooth.

Jouer Matte Moisture Tint: oil-free SPF formula that controls shine and leaves a soft, velvety finish.
——————–> Finally something in a shade I can wear. This is a great little moisturizer, I love that it has SPF in it, that’s one less product to smear on my face, which is a time saver. I just wish the sample was a little bigger.

stila look at me liquid lipstick in Venizia: this creamy formula glides on like a gloss yet lasts like a stain.
——————> This was the July sample choice item, we could choose from three stains. I have fond memories of my time in Venizia, so it was a no brainer to me. The color is very bright for my pasty pale skin.

Supergoop Anti-aging city sunscreen serum SPF 30: this anti aging serum blocks UV rays while hydrating skin and preventing future damage.
——————–> I always see ladies complaining about receiving Supergoop in their boxes. I have been a subscriber since August 2013 and this is honestly my first Supergoop product, so there will be no complaints from me. I love the concept of a sunscreen specifically for our faces, science has proven that our face ages faster than the rest of our bodies, so why not have an ally in your corner. I will definitely be buying the full-sized product of this.

This was a really great box for me, I will use every product I received, well except for the lip stain.

{Life Lessons} So close to motherhood, yet so far away

WaveOn Mother’s day I got the bright blue positive that we all hope and pray for. That little plastic test proved that my body still worked and that I was still worthy of motherhood. Little did I know, this to would be a test and I would once again have to face loss. Fate she can be kind, yet without warning she can churn the seas. At the end of May Jay and I found out that a gestational sac had developed yet it had nothing inside. There was no heart beat, no yolk, and simply no sign of life. It was not meant to be ours.

Someone else needed a baby more than Jay and I did. This, this just wasn’t our time and as Jay put it “Babes it just wasn’t CoraLeigh in there.” Yes, we secretly wanted a girl. June proved to be a test, losing a pregnancy isn’t easy and it put a strain on our relationship. Words were said, tears shed, yet we came out of it more in love than ever. My body didn’t want to let go of our little sac that couldn’t, so a D&C was scheduled and I began to pray. Pray because the last time I had one, it didn’t end so well and it left me with more scars than healthy tissue.

I picked out the expert, we talked through the procedure and he promised that he was going to do it right. On Monday I went under and he did it right. To my surprise as well as his, my uterus had hardly any scar tissue and the tare in the uterus healed perfectly. My chances of having a healthy pregnancy are as high as they can be for a pulmonary embolism/stroke survivor. I have a feeling that my third time and Jay’s second time will be the charm. I am not going to give up on motherhood just yet, this this is a dream I have always wanted.

Sometimes I look at pregnant women and think to myself “you are so darn lucky.” Most women have no idea the struggles a pulmonary embolism/stroke survivor faces in pregnancy. My world is complicated and most of us are told “no more babies.” I took that statement as a challenge and lord willing one day I will hold a baby of my own. Someone has to go first and tread the waters so others can follow. Right now medical science knows so little about hormone induced blood clots and heart issues, I think it’s time to change it. More research needs to be done and when that happens more women just like me will be able to carry babies of their own.

For now I will settle for the knowledge that my body still and does work. I am blessed to have two children in heaven, my son Lucia and a baby we never got to know. I’d like to believe that this was a test, a nudge from God to let me know I am still capable of carrying a child. The little empty sac will always be apart of me and I will always wonder who it would have been. I have no doubt that my turn is coming and that Jay and I will get to one day share a super cute baby announcement with all of you.

{BirchBox} The Tig – June 2015

June 2015
“THE TIG: GUEST EDITOR BOX: Curated by actress Meghan Markle, founder of The Tig lifestyle blog, this box is brimming with A-list must-haves for all your summer escapades.”

I am loving Birchbox’s guest editor collaborations and sample choice. One can chose either a sample or the guest editor box. For the month of June I went with the guest editor box because, it includes a Davines product that I had never tried before. Meghan founder of The Tig lifestyle blog selected products that would be essential for a summer escape and I could not be happier with her selections.
June 15

Summer for me means playing in the sprinkler with my niece, farmers markets, and unexpected road trips. I am a weekend warrior who tries to squeeze a lifetime of memories into just two days. Whether its outings with Jay, drinks on the patio with friends, or collecting shells on the beach with Sophia, I let every drop of sweet summer soak in. My beauty routine usually falls to the back seat and sunscreen and a good BB cream are my trusty weapons. My hair its to frizzy to tame so a bun is my go to style along with a cute dress or skirt. This girl rarely does shorts and I am perfectly ok with that, just as long as my pasty legs see the sun.

“So what did you get in your June Birchbox!?”

June-15
The Tig

Davines SU Hair & Body Wash: This rich gel cleanses head to toe, hydrating skin and preventing sun damage to strands.
————————–> This, this right here is my new go to body wash. It literally smells like a bomb pop or like summer in a bottle. It leaves my skin feeling so soft and fresh. After the first use I instantly ordered the full-sized product from BirchBox.com, yes it is just that darn amazing!

Harvey Prince – Hello Body Cream: infused with summery citrus and floral notes, this hydrator leaves your skin feeling soft and lightly scented.
————————-> This is a good summer scent, it is very light and it has a hint of lemon.

Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow: this multitasker, rich in antioxidants, covers imperfections, evens tone and calms skin.
———————> I am certain this must be a great product otherwise Meghan wouldn’t have picked it for her box. The shade I received is just to dark for my skin tone.

Oribe Cote d’Azur Eau de Parfum: reminiscent of the fragrant breezes of the French Riviera.

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-minute peel: this acid-free peel gently exfoliates for instantly smoother, softer, and brighter skin.
————————> This was my sample choice product for May, so I now have two of these bad boys. I have seen it in previous sneak peeks and it left me intrigued and I knew that i needed it in my life. I have yet to try it thou, it is giving me the sad eyes from the bathroom sink. I keep telling it when I have time, its you and me peel, its you and me.

This was a great box and all of the products complimented each other. I loved that there was a good mix of skin care and body products. Everyone can use a travel size lotion and not to mention the Davines sample is like a giant not your normal BirchBox sized sample. I hope all of you loved your box as much as I loved mine.

{BirchBox} Cupcakes and Cashmere

May 2015
“ELEVATE EVERYDAY LIFE, May’s box is curated by Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere, this month’s picks bring out-of-the-ordinary elegance to your daily routine.”

May15

Elevate everyday life…….sounds like a plan to me. I like how BirchBox partnered with a regular girl like you and me and not a celebrity or brand for this month’s curated box and products. Products are more relate-able when they are picked by someone in your own demographic. Or well maybe close to your demographic, I am not one to wear a bold lip color or crazy shade of eye shadow. However I am always willing to try new things.

“So what did you get in your May BirchBox?!”

May_2015

————————> I am seeing a lot of gel moisturizers on the market this spring and I think I like them. This one is pretty great it absorbed quickly and left my skin feeling cool and smooth. I like cool and smooth, especially when it comes to pickup lines.

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel: this acid-free peel gently exfoliates for instantly softer, smoother, and brighter skin.

Mad Men - April 2015

Mad Men – April 2015

“This month, we’re over the moon to be partnering with the award-winning series to celebrate their final episodes with this curated BirchBox. It’s filled with essentials to help you get a modern-retro look and make Joan, Peggy, Megan, or Betty be proud.”

CONFESSION:
I AmandaJean have never watched an episode of Mad Men and my life is just fine.
END CONFESSION

The April Sample choice sneak peek was loaded with hair products and not one, but two Guest Editor curated boxes. BirchBox partnered with Mad Men to bring us a NY box and an LA Box. As soon as I saw that the LA box included a Not Soap Radio product, I knew I needed it in my life. So I waited for that gosh darn sample choice email to come and made my selection, to turn around and wait for it to arrive. Stalking tracking codes has become my new life hobby, its fun yet very very frustrating.

“So what did you get in your Mad Men Box!?”

April 2015
strong>Mad Men – April 2015

12 Benefits Instant Healthy Hair Treatment: this all in one detangler reverses damage to leave hair sleek and healthy

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Brightening Illuminator: give skin a subtle, back from the coast glow with this shimmery highlighter

LAQA & Co. Sheer Lip Lube Pencil in Honeypot: this sheer bubblegum pink shade signals that you’re ready to cut loose

{BirchBox} Rent The Runway

“It’s All In The Details”

BirchBox

In late January BirchBox sent out a little sneak peek video of the February sample choice options. The actual products did not tickle my fancy, but the curated box did and I knew I had to get my hands on it. For February’s curated box BirchBox partnered with Rent The Runway. The box included two of my favorite brands, Not Soap Radio and The Balm. So yes in essence the box was designed for me or thousands of ladies just like me.

“At Rent The Runway we’re all about the pieces that set you apart from the crowd. After all, it’s the details-the dress that flatters you everywhere, the necklace that shimmers just enough- that gives any experience a boost.”

Rent The Runway Teamed up with BirchBox to bring you this collection of beauty essentials so you can amp up your look every day.
