{BirchBox} I’ve Got Points To BURN

Many people often ask me “If BirchBox is more of a miss than a hit, then why do you stay?” Truth for every sample you review on birchbox.com you received 10 points. In addition you receive 1 point for each dollar spent on full-size products in the BirchBox Shop and you can earn points for each friend who signs up using your unique referral link. For every 100 points you earn, you get $10 off a full-size product order in the BirchBox Shop.

How cool is that? For a few minutes of your time you get to earn points for product reviews, buying full-sized products and for getting your friends in on the fun. The points add up quickly. Each Box contains between 5 to 7 products every month. That’s 50 to 70 points towards your 100 point goal. It should be known that BirchBox’s customer service fix all is to throw 100 points your way when a sample is broken/missing or if your box has gone MIA. They are so nice and bonus you just earned yourself an extra $10.00 to spend in the shop.

A few weeks ago I logged in to my account and found out that I had 245 points, which equaled $20.00. I brought up the BirchBox Ap (yes they have an Ap) and let my fingers do the shopping.

“What did you buy with your BirchBox Points?” Oh I am so glad you asked! Lets find out!

BirchBox Points

Caldrea Dish Soap – scent: Basil Blue Sage Holler! Caldrea is a Minneapolis company that was founded out of the belief that utility and eco-chic can go hand in hand. They’re committed to using high-grade ingredients and artful designs.
———————-> What can I say I love buying local brands that are eco-friendly and smell darn right amazing! True story: “the only reason I bought this dish soap is because of the scent, Basil Blue Sage. I want to name my next child boy or girl Basil.” Yea, yea I know I am going to name my child after an herb. (The meaning for the name Basil is a story for another day) Anyways back to the dish soap. Caldrea cleans like a dream and does not leave a yucky film on your glassware. Go buy a bottle and find out for yourself. I promise it’s that good!

(MALIN + GOETZ) mojito lip balm: swipe on this mojito-inspired lip balm whenever we’d like, and treat ourselves to the delectable scent of our favorite summertime cocktail.
——————> I received this as a sample a long time ago and I fell in love with the consistency. A little bit goes along way and it keeps your lips soft. Soft lips = kissable lips and that makes for a happy girl.

Sumbody Exfoliating Bonbons – in citrus splash/jasmine: these bonbons pack a lot into a little bite. Crammed with all-natural goodies specialized to slough away dead skin and replenish cells with moisture, you’ll want to make these your new cleansing companions—even in a time crunch.
——————> I have yet to receive this product as a sample, however I am always on the look out for a new salt scrub. They claim that one bonbon will last you 3 showers…………………well mine dissolved in one shower. Which is fine because that one little bonbon left my skin super smooth and soft.

My order total before points were applied was $34.50. I applied 200 points to that $34.50 and that brought my total down to $14.50! How awesome is that? I saved $20.00 and not to mention I got free shipping. Which was a double bonus. So you see it pays to be a BirchBox subscriber, the points definitely make it a winner in my book. If you want to get in on he saving fun, run on over to BirchBox.com and sign yourself up!

{BirchBox} Free Wheeling May 2014

Spring has finally arrived in the mini apple. We have had many days over 70 degrees and I broke out my strapless top last Tuesday. Warm weather brings the suburbanites to the city and my stress level raises just ever so slightly. Yet, the hipsters keep on peddling, the artsy folks keep on drawing, and the rest of us are counting down the days until fall. In the fall and winter months suburbanites rarely visit uptown.

Then again the suburbanites only invade us for just a little bit and in the end I love summer in Uptown. One can spend an entire day people watching down at Lake Calhoun, take your pup to the park, you just might get a date, and hell its patio season folks. There is nothing like patio season in Minneapolis. Whiskey always taste better when it’s sipped on a patio with friends. Not to mention many patios allow dogs and the muppet like dog loves hanging out under the table.

Speaking of peddling hipsters, the BirchBox theme for May is “Free Wheeling.” There theme is lost on me and I am not quite sure of “Free Wheeling” = ITS FINALLY FUCKING SPRING!!! Yea, I can’t figure that equation out, anyway as always BirchBox is either hit or miss. I’m afraid to say it but I think BirchBox is having growing pains and they do not have a handle on their shipping partner. I got an email on May 11th telling me my box had shipped with a tracking link. The link didn’t work and so I waited. I waited to check it again on May 13th, in which it told me my box was born! It hadn’t even left there Tennessee warehouse. I called customer service and she ensured me it was out the door and I would receive it by the weekend. That was a fluffy lie, on Saturday my tracking told me my box was still in Tennessee. Monday the 19th the tracking updated and said my box was in Georgia. Last time I checked Minnesota was not in Georgia. Long story short my box finally arrived the day after my surgery on May 22.

{BirchBox} Rainy Days – April 2014

April showers may bring May flowers, but they’re also a blissful excuse to stay inside, doing all those things that fall by the wayside when it’s glorious out. April Showers? Who is BirchBox kidding, in Minnesota we have April snow storms. So maybe they meant April snow storms bring May flowers. Yea, that’s most definitely what they meant. Winter is finally starting to lose its grip and the temps are on the rise in the mini apple.

Since the snow is melting and the days are getting longer one has to hold out hope that summer will soon be upon us. As the seasons change so does my skin care and beauty routine. I love trying new products and adding them to my daily routine. The sneak peek video had me pretty darn excited and I eagerly waited to unlock my April box.

“I am super excited to share the fun I unboxed this month!”

Rainy Days

Number 4™ Reconstructing Masque: Soy protein works to reconstruct and strengthen hair while natural conditioners like shea butter, jojoba seed oil, and sunflower oil nourish and moisturize. Don’t forget about the silkiness factor — for that, there’s silicone polymer, which smoothes and detangles.

derma e® Hydrating Night Crème with Hyaluronic Acid: Panthenol (aka Pro Vitamin B5) and hyaluronic acid work together to draw moisture to the top layer of skin and bind it there, plumping cells and filling out fine lines and wrinkles in the process. Vitamins E and C use their super antioxidant powers to repair damage, while vitamin A stimulates the production of collagen.

——————> This is a super cute color for spring and I cannot wait to polish my toes with it.

theBalm® cosmetics How ‘Bout Them Apples?™: Color – PIE, This creamy lip and cheek palette offers gorgeous, long-wearing color with a slightly wet feel that makes it oh-so-blendable.
——————–> I loved this so much that I plunked down my credit card and bought the full-sized pallet from the BirchBox shop. I used 100 BirchBox points plus a 20% off code and picked it up for $15.40, it normally sells for $32.00. I cannot wait for it to arrive.

KIND Healthy Grain Bars: Each bar is made with five super grains for maximum nutritional and taste bud benefits. Available in Maple Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt, Dark Chocolate Chunk, Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate, and a variety pack of the three.

BirchBox finally got it right! I am going to try every product except for the bar this month. Plus I actually bought a full-sized product from the BirchBox shop. I just might buy the Color Club Gems collection too.

{BirchBox} Spring Forward – March 2014

Spring Forward

Spring Forward

Somewhere in the world Spring has sprung. I am certain that it has yet to spring in Minnesota. Yesterday we had a winter storm that caused a 61 car pile up on a major freeway and snow is yet again in our forecast. Not to mention we have been under a winter parking ban that continues until next Tuesday. I haven’t parked on the even side of the street in months. It has gotten to the point where I have to take a picture of the street sign so I remember where I parked the Prius in the morning. Winter is dragging on and she has definitely wore out her welcome.

I am ready for spring. I my toes want to meet the flip to my flop, tulips are eagerly awaiting to burst through the ground and I find myself dreaming of warm days. Luckily, BirchBox put a little spring into my step this month. March’s theme is “Spring Forward.” The season is changing, and we’ve got an extra hour of glorious daylight (woo hoo!) and an hour less of shut-eye (blargh) on our hands. Whether you’re a glass half-empty or half-full kind of gal, what better time to focus on maximizing your daily routine? I like the sound of that, it gives me hope as the days grow longer that Spring is hiding around the corner. It has to come, otherwise I am going to move south of the equator.

“I am super excited to share the fun I unboxed this month!”

Spring Birch

Spring Forward – March 2014

Gilchrist & Soames – London Collection Body Lotion: Fast-absorbing lotion leaves skin silky-smooth.

INIKA – Eyeliner in Green Lagoon: mineral based liner.

Jurliqu – Purely Bright Radiance Serum: Plant-powered formula that brightens and prevents dark spots.

Keims – Cleanshine Energizing Shampoo: This cleanser fortifies and nourishes strands for a silky-smooth finish.

Beauty Extra

Woohoo! Who doesn’t love an extra! I love extras! Jurlique – Purely Bright Cleanser: Gentle exfoliator that fades stubborn dark spots while whisking away dirt, oil, and make up.

I also received a treat from Ghirardelli in my box, they sent me a square of Ghirardelli’s Cherry Tango. If you have been reading my blog then you know chocolate and I don’t mix. So I gladly handed this off to a coworker. He gladly accepted it.

BirchBox did a really great job creating a Spring Forward box, I was exposed to a lot of new brands and had fun trying all of the products.

{BirchBox} Step and Repeat – February 2014

February14 For February’s box BirchBox teamed up with the editors at US Weekly to bring us a red carpet worthy box. Filled with great finds and innovative beauty products perfect for the stars.

My box included everything (well almost everything) I needed to perfect my own red carpet ready look. Ever since my chat with BirchBox customer service the products in my boxes have greatly improved. Sadly thou the sizes not so much. One of the biggest complaints across the blogosphere is that the products this month were small (as in really small), I have to agree with the masses. The samples were very small this month and if all goes well I will be able to squeeze out one use of everything I received this month. Besides the small factor, I am pretty darn pleased with everything I received this month.

“I am super excited to share the fun I unboxed this month!”

February2014
Step and Repeat:

Beauty Protector – Protect & Oil: this hair oil defends against UV rays, heat and breakage

COOLA: Mineral-based tinted moisturizer

Ruby Wing – color changing nail polish: in Kitten Heel

Smashbox Cosmetics – Full Exposure Mascara: Hybrid fiber formula tat expertly lengthens, volumizes, and curls sans clumps or flakes.

LIFESTYLE EXTRA: Smashbox Cosmetics – Full Exposure Palette: a range of versatile hues. *Note: one does not actually receive the palette, you receive a card with a dab of the shadows on it. It is most likely only good for one use of each color.*

All in all BirchBox put together a pretty great box for me this month an I cannot wait to see what March’s box will contain.

{Birch Box} GO TIME ~ January 2014

GO TIME

GO TIME

Ever since I had a chat with a Birch Box customer service rep the products in my box have greatly improved. I can’t remember her name, but she was great. The Rep took the time to help me create my profile, she said the trick to he Birch Box profile is “less is more.” Checking everything is like saying “oh give me any old thing you have.” Less helps them pin point the exact products that will benefit your lifestyle and beauty routine. I am very happy with my samples this month.

The Birch Box theme for January 2014 is GO TIME. “In 2014 we are taking on more: more things to try, to conquer, to integrate into our lives. New products—in the form of this month’s samples—are just the beginning. We’ll be bringing you plenty of inspiration, from a 10-minute workout you can do anywhere to the top beauty trends to try right now.”

I must say that’s a pretty great theme to start out the year with. I always look at the start of the new year as an empty book. Each minute and each hour of every day are filled with moments that will line every page of my newly opened book. Will it be an incredible year or a terrible blunder, only fate knows that.

Back to the Box! I am super excited to share the fun I unboxed this month!

GO TIME:

100% Pure Reparative cream, Smoothing Night Cream & Organic Eye Cream:This moisturizing trio diminishes lines, plumps, brightens, and smooths.
——————-> Earlier in the week my face was very dry from the harsh winter weather so I gave the Reparative cream a shot. I went to bed with scaly dry skin and woke up to a beautifully smooth and soft face. No flakes, just flawless skin! That’s a win win in my book.

Fekkai Brilliant Gloss Crème: Rich in olive oil, this creamy frizz-tamer gives strands all day shimmer.
—————-> Truth: I keep forgetting to try this and I am kicking my self in he tush for it. This product has rave reviews and it is now safely sitting in my shower rack.

INIKA Mineral Eyeshadow in Eternal Marine: Packed with certified-organic ingredients, these natural pigments stay vibrant for hours.
——————-> The shade I received is beautiful, however it is to dark for my fair skin.

Nail Rock Glitter: The UK brand’s two-step system for your sparkliest mani ever.
—————–> I received the ruby red polish and matching glitter. This polish was a little complicated for my tastes so I handed it off to my coworker Renae. I am pretty darn sure she will put this very pretty polish to good use.

LifeStyle Extra: Ahmad Tea London

All in all January’s box was awesome and I cannot wait to see what Birch Box has in store for February!

{BirchBox} December – “Holiday 2013”

HOLIDAY 2013

HOLIDAY 2013

As you know I have a hit or seriously missed relationship with my BirchBox. The items are either total hits or major fails. Since my profile was redone by a BirchBox employee, I knew my December box would be good and that I would get products I would actually want t try. Wrong, well partly wrong. Once again chocolate was in my box, this time they put it in side the little cardboard envelope so it did not touch the items.

One thing I must say is that I am really enjoying the handy-dandy BirchBox App that they created. It allows you to track your box, view past boxes, and shop. It was nice to just click the box and see where it was instead of opening a different website to track my box. Plus I was able to see exactly what my box was going to have.

The items are a great variety and I received quite a few items that were included in the BirchBox December sneak peek video. However the size of The samples left a lot to be desired. As in I got a tiny pot of lotion, a tiny bottle of who knows what, and a tiny package of dry shampoo. I think I was spoiled by the largeness of the samples and products in my first Ipsy Glam Bag. Ipsy gave me not one but FIVE (yes I said FIVE) full-sized products! Even thou the size of my samples left a lot to be desired, I was still excited about them.

So what did I get in my Holiday 2013 BirchBox? “Oh, I am so glad you asked! Let’s find out!”

HOLIDAY 2013

Camille Beckman – Glycerin Hand Therapy – Midnight Monarch: A quick absorbing formula that restores skin without feeling greasy.
———————–> Winter has officially arrived in Minnesota and I was really excited to try this lotion. That is until I saw the sample size, its tiny, as in the size of a quarter tiny. Secondly, the smell is very very strong and a picture of little old ladies playing bingo came to mind. Sadly, my excitement about this product was short-lived. I am sure its great, however I just cannot get over the scent, so this one will be gifted to someone who loves the smell of bingo dobbers and musk.

Grand Central Beauty – S.M.A.R.T> Skin Perfecting Polisher (TM): This exfoliating peel is perfect for sensitive skin.
———————-> Again I was super-duper excited about this product. The sample that was included left a lot to be desired. I emptied the tiny bottle in one use. It made my skin feel soft and I wanted more of it. But the bottle had run dry.

LAQA & CO Lil’ Lip Duo – in Bossy Boots & Ring of Fire: Megawatt color with nourishing vitamin E in a crayon applicator.
————————-> Notice how the product name says “Duo?” Well I did not get a duo in my box, I only received on lip pencil. Which is fine, I got the Bossy Boots pencil, I have yet to try it. It is the perfect shade of red and I will most likely try it sometime this week. Just if you say “Duo” you should include both lip pencils. Because duo means two.

Lulu Organics – Lavender and Clay Sage Hair Powder: A dry shampoo that absorbs oil an leaves behind a lovely scent.
————————> I gave this powder a shot on Saturday and I love it. I just wish there was more in the box. The scent was lovely, it did just as it said it would and it did not weigh my hair down. I would totally buy the full-sized product.

LIFESTYLE EXTRA! Chuao Chocopod – Honeycomb
————————-> I am allergic to chocolate, so this will be going to my niece Sophia. Sophia loves chocolate.

All in all this was a pretty good box, I just wish the samples were bigger and that I had received a different scent of lotion. Then again the mystery is part of the fun.

{Birch Box} November: “More Good”

November

Truth: I received two Birch Boxes for the month of November. My first box was a total bust, I couldn’t use anything in the box because of the chocolate bar laying at the bottom. So I tweeted, I posted on the Birch Box Facebook page, and they reached out. I had a heart to heart with Charity and explained why I wasn’t happy with their product. Charity took the time to help me adjust my profile, answer my questions, and to find a box that didn’t have chocolate in it. Charity was amazing and she is the reason I decided to give Birch Box a few more months.

Soon I received an email telling me my new box was on its way. The box was laying in front of my door when I got home. Hearing the box jingle peaked my interest. I was all ready preparing myself for disappointment, instead I was pleasantly surprised. For the first time I absolutely want to hands down try everything in my box. There wasn’t a wrinkle cream or curl keeper in sight, and that made me happy.

Birch Box picked “More Good” as the November theme. As in you want more of a good thing, to do good, and be more thankful. The theme minus the grammar fits the month of November perfectly. We could all and use a little more good in our lives. One can never have to much of a good thing.

“What did I get in my box?” Oh, I am so glad you asked!

Eyeko – Black Magic Mascara, a water-resistant formula that curls and lasts all day.

Laura Mercier – Lip Glace in Opal, a rich colored lip gloss that provided high shine.

Tiossan – Body Cream, loaded with antioxidants that leaves skin silky soft.

Vasanti Cosmetics – Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator.

Lifestyle Extra
Ahmad Tea Long – a mix of different flavored teas.

All in all I am super happy with this box and I cannot wait to try all of the goodies I received.

{Birch Box} – Beauty Buzz October

October
Well done Birch Box, you finally hit the nail on the head this month. Normally the box will contain one or two products that are what I consider “try worthy.” This month is a different story, I want to try every product in the box, well except maybe the chap stick and curl keeper. I am a Bert’s Bees kind of girl who does not tolerate other chap sticks well and I am pretty darn dedicated to my current for curly hair care products.

So what was inside my beauty buzz box? That’s a great question. Let’s find out!

October’s Beauty Buzz Box

*Avene – Cleanance Gel Soapless Cleanser – Full size $20.00
*** The pH-balanced wash whisks away impurities with calming French spring water

{What I thought of the product} – I have used the cleanser a few times this week and sadly I am not a fan. The cleanser made my face feel very dry and stiff after use. I give this product a thumbs down and will stick with my drug store brand cleanser.

*Curly Hair Solutions – Curl Keeper – Full size $10.00
*** A water-based, weightless serum that keeps curls shiny, defined, and frizz fee
I have very curly hair and I am very skeptical of products that promise to keep my curls frizz free. I have yet to try the sample and I don’t think I will. If you have curly hair like me, then you most likely have a brand that you stick to and worship, straying from that brand is frowned upon in at least 28 countries.

*DDF – Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer Moisturizing Serum – Full size $85.00
*** This high-tech serum minimizes pores and softens fine lines with advanced amino peptides
{What I thought of the product} – First off, Birch Box why do you keep on sending my anti-aging products? Its getting a little old, I am only 30 years old and wrinkles are non-existent at the moment. Anyways I did try the serum and was very impressed by it. The serum is very light, goes on easy, is not heavy or greasy, and left my skin soft. I could see myself using this product on a regular basis, well that is if it weren’t for the $85.00 price tag. I am a girl on a budget and this product is definitely out of my price point.

*theBalm Cosmetics – Stainiac in Beauty Queen – Full size $17.00
*** A stain that gives cheeks and lip a sheer rosy tint.
{What I thought of the product} – I am not a blush kind of girl so I would never use this product on my cheeks. However my lips are a different story. The stain worked just like they claimed, it gave my lips a rosy hue and lasted for most of the day, even with multiple chap stick application. Again I am a girl on a budget so I can’t justify $17.00 for one lip product.

**Birch Box Find**
Chap Stick Hydration Lock in Vanilla Creme

All in all I was pretty happy with my Birch Box this month and I am actually looking forward to next months box.

{Birch Box} September’s Box

HeritageMy first Birch box was a bust. However when researching reviews other subscribers said it was one of the best boxes ever. I beg to differ, then again their boxes contained a different assortment of products than I received. Like I said before I believe in giving everyone and everything a fair chance.

Earlier this month I received an email telling me that Birch Box was turning three and the theme was Heritage. They said that the box was going to celebrate the subscribers. To me celebration and heritage are two separate things, their theme was lost on me. My box arrived on September 10th and I was excited yet skeptical to see what the pink box contained.

So what did I get in my September Birch Box? That’s a good question! Lets find out.

September Birch Box: Heritage

Beauty Protector Shampoo: this sulfate free formula adds volume and shine.

Beauty Protector Conditioner: is formulated with natural ingredients like shea butter and apple, lemon, and orange extracts. Together, they hydrate and nourish hair with vitamins and minerals.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Sensitive Peel: a gentle peel with fruit derived acids to dissolve dead skin.

Ruffian Nail Lacquer: in Fox Hunt, a vibrant orange hue.

Soak: a rinse-free formula that takes care of your delicates, safe enough to use on baby’s clothes too.

What did I try? What didn’t I try? Was the box a bust?

I am glad you asked! I was excited to see the Juice Beauty Green Apple peel, I have heard about it from girlfriends who love it. At $39.00 I didn’t want to invest in a full sized product that I might not love. Getting the sample size in my box was awesome. I used it on Friday night and hands down love it. My skin was smooth and bright after use. I will most likely invest in the full sized product.

My toes badly needed a new coat of polish and the vibrant orange tone of Fox Hunt was right up my color ally. The polish covers well and dries quickly. I like polishes that dry quickly, as I am a dog mom on the go and I do no have time to wait for polish to dry.

I have very curly hair. I am partial to my hair care brand, so I will not be trying the Beauty Protector shampoo an conditioner. The only good thing about it is, that the samples are under the 4oz rule so I can use them as travel sized items for my carry on. When that happens I will follow up and let you know my thoughts on Beauty Protector.

Soak’s rinse free formula sort of freaks me out. I am a germ phob at heart and not rinsing something out makes my skin crawl. They say its gentle, its just I need to rinse stuff out in order to quiet my phobia.

All in all Septembers box wasn’t a bust. I love the color of the nail lacquer I received and the Juice Beauty Green Apple peel. Two products out of five isn’t bad.

Birch Box is a $10 a month deluxe beauty sample subscription program. You earn 10 points for every $10 spent. When you’ve spent $100, you earn $10 to use in their shop or you can put that $10 towards your monthly box to make it free. To find out more go to http://www.birchbox.com.
